The UCFSD Wellness Committee Presents: iGen Book discussion & Author Visit

The UCFSD Wellness Committee is working to create awareness and conversation around the topic of the "iGen" generation. iGen is the first generation to spend their entire adolescence in the age of the smartphone. With social media and texting replacing other activities, iGen spends less time with their friends in person—perhaps why they are experiencing unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

But technology is not the only thing that makes iGen distinct from every generation before them; they are also different in how they spend their time, how they behave, and in their attitudes toward religion, sexuality, and politics. They socialize in completely new ways, reject once sacred social taboos, and want different things from their lives and careers. More than previous generations, they are obsessed with safety, focused on tolerance, and have no patience for inequality.

A highly readable and entertaining first look at how today’s members of iGen—the children, teens, and young adults born in the mid-1990s and later—are vastly different from their Millennial predecessors, and from any other generation, from the renowned psychologist and author of Generation Me.

SCREENAGERS - Growing up in the Digital Age

Screenagers

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

Award-winning SCREENAGERS probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director's own, and depicts messy struggles, over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.

Avon Grove School District has invited UCFSD families to a private viewing of SCREENAGERS December 19, 2017 - 6:30pm at the Jennersville YMCA, West Grove, PA

Attention 5th Grade Parents and Students - Patton Middle School Required Summer Reading 2017

Summer Readiang Logo

“Students’ relationship with reading during the summer is a pretty good window into what the relationship will be once they leave our classrooms for good. We have an opportunity with summer reading to open that window to individual passions and interests and at the same time prevent the loss of achievement that months without practice bring.”
Penny Kittle, Book Love

Each incoming 6th grade student is expected to read a minimum of 3 books this summer. Our expectation is that incoming 6th graders will make mature choices regarding grade appropriate material. Although students are invited to read any three books of their choosing, we recognize that having some recommendations from school may serve helpful. In that regard, we have included:

(1) Recommended Author List for Each Grade
(2) “The Summer Reading List that Speaks to the Middle School Experience”
(3) The 2017-18 Chester County Reading Olympics Middle School Booklist

Parents are asked to sign off on their child’s summer reading. These resources, lists and the sign-off form can be found on The Patton Middle School Library webpage
